Special Instructions for contributors in the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) phase of their IRA retirement accounts!

The IRS currently allows you to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), which is a direct transfer of funds from an individual retirement account (IRA) to qualified charities (like us) to help satisfy your RMD without counting the QCD amount(s) as taxable income. Thus, QCDs provide a tax-efficient way for retirees to fulfill their charitable goals while potentially lowering their taxable income.

 There are a few rules and constraints:

  1. You must be 73 years old or older by the end of the year (the current age for the RMD requirement to kick in).

  2. You must contact your IRA administrator and have them make the donation directly to the charitable organization on your behalf (if you withdraw the money and then donate it, it will still be counted as taxable income).

  3. You are allowed to use this method up to an aggregate of $108,000. So is your spouse if filing jointly.

NOTE: If you are app-savvy, you may be able to do this direct transfer yourself using the portal of your IRA.
